Class Description:

(Same class as offered on Thursdays)

Providing students a space to try their hand at writing creatively and thinking critically, this continuing one-year class can be taken for just one semester or as a full year credit. In the fall, the focus will be on learning how to craft a plot and build structure in a story, and in the spring, students will learn and discuss elements of fiction and developing memorable characters. Each first half of the year exposes students to a variety of classical and contemporary forms of fiction and art criticism. It includes reading short stories, poems, articles on the craft of writing, and the occasional film, documentary, or video essay. The second half of each semester is where students will compose and share their own stories for in-class workshops. The course is flexible for both inquiring and advanced students, allowing them to pursue ideas and interests of their own to help further their appreciation of the craft of writing compelling narratives. Some of the authors students can expect to read are Edgar Allen Poe, H. P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, and Philip K. Dick. While the films vary from semester by semester, they are typically a G-PG13 rating, and are usually a mix of adventure and mystery themes usually films by Steven Spielberg and Alfred Hitchcock. *New students are welcome to join this class mid-year!
