ONE YEAR CLASS:
Why is Music Appreciation important? It boosts concentration, self-discipline, listening and social skills. It also has a tremendous organizing quality to the brain and aids in developing memory, emotion and mood. It helps people to develop skills such as time management, communication, patience, and perseverance among others.
The topics covered in this class will include historical and cultural background to music. Students learn how to listen to music and analyze it and discuss their responses in classes, for example: What patterns did they find in the lyrics? What recurring themes did they spot? What instruments did they hear? They will also learn about the eight basic elements of Music Appreciation: Dynamics, Form, Harmony, Melody, Rhythm, Texture, Timbre and Tonality. They will study the four basic music skills: Music Theory, Songwriting & Composition, Stage Presence, Music Notation. And there will be an overview of four music periods: The Baroque Period and Composers: 1600-1750; The Classical Period and Composers: 1750-1820; The Romantic Period and Composers: 1820-1900; and the Contemporary Period and Composers: Twentieth Century and Beyond
Students will also get to four types of musical instruments: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion, even getting to make a contemporary instrument, the maracas!
